Young Adults Group Fall Series!

This Fall will mark a brand new season of CrossWinds Young Adults Group!

We'll be splitting the discussion in half, one week will be based on the book Permission to Speak Freely, and the other week we'll be doing a discussion on Christian Spirituality. I'm definitely more excited for this Fall than I have been before! I think we'll both be hosting really encouraging discussions as well as providing some really substance - a place where people can meet, ask questions, learn, and grow.

The two discussions will be:

"Permission to Speak Freely" - a discussion based on the book by Anne Jackson, where people ask questions and discuss things they never fully felt comfortable talking about in Church. If you'd like to learn more click here.

"Christian Spirituality" - What does it mean to be a Christian? Why do we do church? What is the Bible? Why do we sing songs? This series will be an in depth look at some of the things that make up the Christian life. Our goal is to provide an informative, discussion based, environment of learning. Should be awesome!!!

We'll also be throwing in some periodic fun events!

Hey Friends,

I've really enjoyed the last couple weeks and getting excited about going on the Not Without You adventure together...

For the next little while we've got some awesome ideas as to what to talk about at group. The new series is called People. We'll be talking about what it really means to be a friend, family member, neighbor and stranger and discussing our responsibilities to the different people in our life. The series will look like this:

May 16: Friendship. One of the most challenging things for people our age is not being flaky and maintaining faithful friendships. Come to share and learn about what it means to be a friend!

May 23: Family. What does it mean to be a son/daughter in a family? How do we transition from dependent to independent?

May 30: No Meeting! Back in action next week.

June 13: Others close by. Everyday we interact with people at work, coffee shops, and stores. How do we love those around us who we come in contact with, but don't really know?

June 20: Others far away. Are we responsible to people around the world we'll never know? How can we live our life every day in a way that is loving of those far away from our day to day?

Cool - I'm super excited. Make sure to come, bring snacks and friends!

New Series! Not Without You!

Hey Young Adults!

I just got back from a planning sesh with Erin and Shannon and I'm really excited to fill you in on the next month of CrossWinds Young Adults Group. Here is an outline of the next few weeks, make sure to be here this week as we have some fun and go on a field trip!

Series: "Not Without You"

We'll be discussing some different subjects pertinent to an important season CrossWinds Church is in as we embark on the adventure of moving to our new permanent location.

Sunday April 11

Game Night / Series Launch / Potluck / Field Trip. This Sunday we'll be playing a couple games and talking about the next few weeks of topics. After the quick discussion we'll be taking a field trip to the new church property. Make sure to be present and bring some food!

Sunday April 18

Ownership. This week we'll be discussion what it means to take responsibility for the people and things in our life. There will also be a clothing swap at the end of the night, so bring in some old clothes that you may want to trade!

Sunday April 25

Sacrifice. This night we'll be discussing what it means to sacrifice for others/causes/etc. We're going to be interviewing a parent who has sacrificed greatly for their child. Also this will be the night where we "sacrifice" for the new church property by donating some of our own money.

Sunday May 2

Commitment. The final night of the series will be about seeing the value of sticking with things long term. We're going to do a little show and tell where we al bring in an item that we've been connected to for a long time. We'll also be interviewing some one who has been committed long term to a specific organization and learn the value of this characteristic.

Relationships

It's pretty likely that most of us have been in some form of romantic relationship. From a simple crush to a committed marriage, relationships are something almost all people experience at some point in their lives. For the next few weeks at College Group we're going to be discussing the views/lessons/traps/blessings/joys/challenges of being in relationships. Each week will be a different topic so make sure not to miss it!

March 7: Views on Relationships. This week will be about comparing/contrasting the latest cultural patterns in relationships with the Biblical direction of relationships. Should be a heated discussion!

March 14: Since this is college group and most of us are not yet married, we thought it would be helpful to talk about what it means to be single and bring up issues like purity, pressure to be in a relationship, how to do dating right, and love.

March 21: Learning from a young married couple: We've decided that it would be awesome to hear from a young couple learning how to be married. We'll be asking questions like: What advice do they have for us, what challenges did they not expect, etc.

March 28: Learning from an established married couple: Just like last week we'll be hearing from the wisdom of those who have been married for a little bit longer. Should be really insightful!

Hi All,

After some discussion, it seems that Sunday Night will best meet our groups needs. So starting January 10, College Group will be moving from Monday to Sunday nights at the same location and 30 mins earlier at 7:00. There will be no college group between now and then as its Christmas time and some of us will be out of town. See you all Jan 10 @ 7:00! Merry Christmas!

We are excited to announce our new College Group series called The Open Table. This is a DVD led discussion crafted by Author Donald Miller (Blue Like Jazz, Searching for God knows What). This is a PERFECT opportunity to invite ANYONE who might benefit from a discussion about God. After watching the videos personally, I'm really excited to see what comes of our conversations. Make sure to come!

Hey Friends,

College Group last night was fun. The cookies and guac were tasty and the conversation was engaging. I was encouraged by the interest about Myanmar and CrossWinds' connection to the people there. I'm really excited to see how our College Group Community will be used to both raise awareness about Myanmar and impact the situation within Myanmar.

For those of you who were interested in coming on the trip, we will be taking applications through September 7, but the sooner you turn them in the better.

Also - in our conversation the movie BURMA VJ was brought up. If you would like to learn more about it check it our here: Bumra VJ Our plan is to see the movie together - a "bonding time" Sunday October 4th in SF at the Red Vic Theater. This will be great chance for us to hang out together, and learn more about Myanmar. Please make the plans to come, and bring friends!

Hey Everyone,

Last night was fun. Erin and Sara both sounded great. It was really cool to see everyone again, I got really excited for the fall and the potential of the group. Here is a recap picture listing some of the ideas we talked about. I can't wait to see what comes next!

Next week we'll be talking about the Church's place around the world. We'll be asking questions like... Is missions work loving? How has the church's image been negatively affected by missionaries? Are we called to share the gospel with others? Are we called to serve people around us? We'll be using CrossWinds' connection to Myanmar as a conversation starter. Should be fun. Make sure to come as I think it will be challenging, educational, and compelling.

So it's Summer and we're excited to have all the College students who are back home. Last week week was packed! There was such a fun feeling of the evening; the conversation was great, the video was cool, and the topic was compelling. I'm really stoked about this summer and College Group.

The past series of topics has been phenomenal. Lets recap some of the issues we have discussed: 1) SOLD - Human trafficking 2) World Hunger - Feed My Starving Children 3) The Child Soldiers of Uganda - Invisible Children 4) KIVA - Micro-loans 5) Consumerism - TOMs Shoes

If you haven't been yet, make sure to come because it has been awesome!

So we need your help brainstorming what we want to talk about next. Our hope for College Group is that each week is an engaging conversation about important subjects where any vantage point is welcomed. If you could ask any question what would you ask? If you could tell others about one thing what would it be? Have you ever wondered about the Christian faith? What are some issues college students face today?

Nooma, Kiva, and Feed My starving Children

Hi everyone.

Last night was really cool. It was a tough conversation to have but good stuff came out of it. It's always hard to hear stories of such hardship and injustice. I was encouraged by our frustration and your broken hearts for those kids. Maybe we can do some thing.

So I have to say that I have been so stoked by the discussions and community that have developed at college group. For the next few weeks we'll be continuing our conversations based on Rob Bell's NOOMA series. If you have any additional thoughts feel free to post them here on the blog.

Coming up next is our series on current social issues. On MARCH 30 our dear friend Rachel Goble will be informing us on a very pressing issue in our world, human trafficking. Ephesians and Nooma

Last night the topic was prayer. Some questions that came up were - What is prayer? How do we pray? Why do we pray? What are the differences / similarities in the way people pray around the world? Does God answer prayer? Why is prayer frustrating sometimes?

College Discussion!

Hey Guys and Gals,

Monday was great. The Coffee was hot and it was cool watching everyone interact and mingle. I was really encouraged by the potential of College Group and what people can get out of it. So I wanted to start an online discussion on any subject worth discussing. If something is on your mind, lets hear it.

I'll start by raising this question:

I am traveling to Burma on Monday. A nation whose people live in poverty, oppression, and neglect. Please take a moment and read about it here - US Campaign for Burma. Here's my question - Why does God allow this to go on? Why do we get to live in relative lavishness in America while so much of the world suffers? Why does the plight of the Burmese people go relatively unnoticed by most of the world? Why are some people born into hardship and others allowed a free pass to comfort? What do you think?
